Collins was a pre-eminent genetic researcher when he was appointed to head the nation's leading medical research agency in 2009. Under his leadership the agency has focused its efforts on increasing support for Alzheimer's disease research, as well as advocating public-private partnerships toward developing innovations in brain technology through its Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies Initiative. This year saw the launch of the White House's $215 million Precision Medicine initiative, which aims to collect genetic and health data from more than 1 million volunteers with the goal of creating more and better treatments for conditions such a cancer.
