Under the direction of Carpenter and his team, LifePoint has pulled off quite a growth spurt recently. In a little more than a year, the system has added eight hospitals and health systems in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Wisconsin. Since January, the for-profit system has acquired St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Ga.; Providence Hospitals in Columbia, S.C.; and, through Duke LifePoint Healthcare, Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C., and Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford, N.C. Carpenter, who has headed LifePoint since 2006, cites his background as a lawyer as a valuable asset to have in negotiating such deals.
