Dr. Georges Benjamin has served as executive director of the American Public Health Association since 2002. Benjamin, 62, has been a vocal supporter of increased funding to state and local public health departments to better prepare for both infectious-disease threats as well as routine preventive care. Before joining the APHA, he was secretary of Maryland's health department and chief of emergency medicine at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington.
