Desmond-Hellmann is CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which works to improve global health and reform education. She was the first woman to serve as chancellor of the University of California at San Francisco, a role she held for five years before joining the foundation in 2014. While at UCSF, she helped researchers connect to big brands including Pfizer and Bayer, and she led an evaluation of the university's business model. She previously served as president of product development for biotech firm Genentech, where she managed the company's product portfolio, which included two of the first gene-targeted therapies for cancer, Avastin and Herceptin.
