Lavizzo-Mourey has been president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the U.S.' largest philanthropic organization dedicated to healthcare, since 2003. In 2014, the foundation awarded 727 grants worth $429 million. Before joining the RWJF, she was a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. A geriatrics specialist, Lavizzo-Mourey, 60, also directed Penn's Institute on Aging and was chief of geriatric medicine at its medical school. She previously was deputy administrator of what is now the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and worked on the White House Health Care Reform Task Force, co-chairing the working group on quality of care.
