50 Most Influential Physician Executives – 2015
Rank: 36
Steven Safyer
President and CEO, Montefiore Medical Center
Dr. Steven Safyer, 66, has been president and CEO of Montefiore Medical Center in New York since 2008. Before, taking the top job at the hospital, Safyer had already worked there for nearly 30 years, starting as an intern and then holding other staff physician roles. He is known as an anti-obesity advocate and has banned candy, soda and deep-fried foods from the hospital premises. Because of Safyer's advocacy efforts, Montefiore was chosen as the location where former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced his plans for a citywide ban on supersize sodas in 2012. Safyer was at his side when he did so.
