Regina Benjamin is the 18th surgeon general of the United States. A family medicine physician, Benjamin, 53, has dedicated her career to helping the underserved access healthcare. She is the founder and former CEO of the Bayou La Batre (Ala.) Rural Health Clinic and former associate dean for rural health at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile. In 2002, she was named president of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, becoming the first black woman to lead a state medical society. President BarackObama chose Benjamin as his surgeon general in July 2009.
