Georges Benjamin, 55, a physician and leader in the public health sector, began his medical career in the Army, where he served as the chief of emergency medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington in the early 1980s. Since 2002, he has been the executive director of the American Public Health Association, where he has increased advocacy efforts and development activity. Before coming to the APHA, he was chief executive officer of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where he oversaw and expanded the state’s Medicaid program and helped develop the state’s bioterrorism plan.
