Rush is expanding its footprint in Chicago's western suburbs with the opening of its latest outpatient center on Jan. 2.
Located at 2011 York Road in Oak Brook, Ill., the facility is a joint venture between the academic health system and Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, one of the largest orthopedic practices in Chicago.
The health system's three-story, 100,000-square-foot center features primary and specialty care, including dermatology and neurosurgery, as well as an outpatient surgery center. The first floor, which is dedicated to Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, includes imaging and a sports performance center to help patients transition from physical therapy to more strenuous activities.
"We've been making considerable investments in our ambulatory capacity" as advancements in technology have shifted historically inpatient services to outpatient settings, said Michael Dandorph, president of the Rush system and Rush University Medical Center.
The new facility, which cost roughly $65 million, increases Rush's offsite ambulatory capacity by about 30 percent, Dandorph said. That figure will jump in 2022 when Rush opens a $473 million outpatient cancer and neurological care center next to its Near West Side headquarters.
Rush also recently opened a multispecialty outpatient facility in the South Loop. The center's patient volume "is somewhere in the 10 to 15 percent range above what we expected overall," Dandorph said, noting there were more than 3,600 patient visits in November.
In addition to the investments Rush is making in the city, Dandorph said the system will continue looking to meet consumers where they are. That could mean growing organically or entering into a partnership with a hospital system, physicians group or technology company, he added.
