Nov. 10-13: There won't be any shortage of hot topics at the American Medical Association's interim meeting just outside of Washington, D.C. The House of Delegates will debate a number of policies, including making it easier for patients to buy from licensed Canadian pharmacies “when product integrity can be assured.” Delegates will also hash out whether the physicians' group should call on private health plans to cover evidence-based preventive services without hitting patients with an out-of-pocket expense such as a co-pay. On gun violence, which has become a mainstay on the agenda, the physician group will debate a policy on concealed-carry permits. Modern Healthcare's D.C. reporting team will be on site providing coverage.
Nov. 13-14: Although not specific to healthcare, the Federal Trade Commission holds its seventh hearing on “Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century.” Why does Week Ahead care? Well, this one is focused on “the use of algorithms, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics in business decisions and conduct.”
Nov. 13-14: Executives from across the country descend on Chicago for the National Center for Healthcare Leadership's 2018 meeting. The focus, of course, leadership's impact on disruption/innovation/transformation. Or, as the NCHL puts it, “The Arriving Future.” Carilion Clinic CEO Nancy Howell Agee will be honored with the 2018 Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award. Peter Butler of Chicago's Rush University Medical Center will be recognized with the Distinguished Service Award.
Nov. 14-16: Speaking of disruption and innovation, TEDMED, the offshoot of TED Talks, is sure to feature some thought-provoking commentary during this year's annual gathering, titled, “Chaos+Clarity.” The event takes place in Palm Springs, Calif., but some of it will be live-streamed. NYC Health & Hospitals CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz will be on hand talking about the impact of economic disparities on health.
