CareFirst Blue Cross and Blue Shield has named Brian Pieninck as its next president and CEO, succeeding Chet Burrell who announced his retirement in September last year.
Pieninck, who joined CareFirst in 2015, currently serves as the Baltimore-based insurer's chief operating officer. He'll take over the top spot on July 1.
"Brian is an exceptional and energetic leader who has quickly demonstrated his ability to achieve outstanding business results while remaining focused on the importance of CareFirst's not-for-profit mission and the people who work to uphold it each day," Stephen Waechter, chair of CareFirst's board of directors, said in the announcement.
Before CareFirst, Pieninck spent nearly two decades with for-profit insurer Aetna in various roles, most recently as president of the Americas for Aetna's international division.
