American Well will acquire acute-care telemedicine firm Avizia, the company announced Monday.
American Well has focused mostly on the outpatient market, though it also has partnerships with U.S. hospitals and health systems, including Cleveland Clinic and Intermountain Healthcare.
With the acquisition, announced at the American Telemedicine Association conference, American Well will gain a greater presence in hospitals. More than 1,300 hospitals run Avizia telehealth software.
After the acquisition, providers will use a single platform for all kinds of care, and developers will link that platform to electronic health records systems.
While limited reimbursement still hinders the adoption of telemedicine, virtual care is catching on thanks in part to legislation passed in February 2018 that lets Medicare Advantage plans cover more virtual services.
