Rising star: Rachel Nickel
Rachel NIckel, 34
Hailing from a family of physicians and nurses, Rachel Nickel has healthcare in her blood. Armed with a psychology degree, she entered an accelerated nursing program at Johns Hopkins University. From Baltimore, she made her way to University Medical Center, where she landed on the medical intensive-care unit. She serves as a critical-care educator on both the medical and trauma ICUs. She's active on a number of hospital committees, including the medical ICU's shared governance council and an engagement and retention committee. Along those lines, Nickel is involved in the hospital's Be Well Committee, which aims to address wellness, stress and burnout.
