The Detroit Medical Center has notified 1,529 patients of a protected health information breach, the health system announced Thursday.
The DMC was notified by a staffing agency that one of the agency's employees allegedly stole protected health information and provided it to unauthorized individuals not affiliated with the hospital.
The information breach affected patients at a DMC facility March 2015-May 2016.
DMC did not identify the facility affected or the staffing agency.
The Detroit health system said it has filed a complaint with law enforcement regarding the breach and is cooperating in an investigation.
After becoming aware of the breach, the hospital said it reviewed all electronic health records of affected patients, terminated the employee responsible for the breach and implemented changes to prevent further breached.
"Hospital officials deeply regret this situation has occurred," it said in a statement.
The hospital has offered free credit monitoring to the affected patients and provided them with a phone number for more information: (888) 362-3370.
