Who: Dr. Barbara McAneny, 64
New role: President-elect of the American Medical Association, the nation's largest physician organization with more than 225,000 members. Her one-year term will begin in June 2018.
Background: A clinical oncologist, McAneny served as chair of the AMA's board of trustees from 2015 to 2016. She is CEO and co-founder of New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants, where she still practices, as well as the New Mexico Cancer Center. She also served on the board of the American Society of Clinical Oncology from 2005 to 2008, and was president of the New Mexico Medical Society in 2000.
Improving private practice: In 2012, she was awarded a $19 million grant from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation to test how private oncology practices could reduce costs while improving quality. The model, known as the Community Oncology Medical Home, served as the basis for CMS' Oncology Care Model, an episodic payment model that offers financial incentives for providers who improve quality in cancer care.
