Barbara Martin, the longtime CEO of north suburban Vista Health System, is out.
Today was Martin's last day on the job, said Deanna Stich, interim director of marketing. She nor assistant CEO Kim Needham would say what led to Martin's departure or provide any more details.
The Waukegan-based two-hospital system that Martin led is a small community network with far fewer dollars and more low-income patients than rivals. She worked to expand Vista's footprint to better compete against more affluent competitors including Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital in that suburb. Her efforts included a failed attempt to build a new hospital in wealthier Lindenhurst, a move Vista said would feed revenue back to the system's facilities in working-class Waukegan.
Vista was part of Community Health Systems, a national for-profit hospital chain, until last year, when the system was among about three dozen medical centers nationwide that were spun off into a new company called Quorum Health.
A Quorum representative did not immediately return a message to comment.
