NYC Health & Hospitals/Jacobi replaces three top executives, and other Northeast regional news

NYC Health & Hospitals/Jacobi in the Bronx has replaced its chief executive, chief financial officer and chief medical officer. The timing of the changes was coincidental, according to a hospital spokesman.

William Foley, Jacobi's former chief executive, was promoted to the system's senior vice president for acute care overseeing its 11 hospitals. Foley replaced Richard Gannotta, who accepted a senior executive role at U.C. Irvine Medical Center, Orange, Calif.

Christopher Mastromano, who joined the system in 2011, is now acting chief executive of Jacobi. Dr. Michael Zinaman is acting chief medical officer. Zinaman previously was chair of obstetrics, gynecology and women's health at the Jacobi and North Central Bronx campuses. Ellen Barlis, who has worked at the system since 2007, has taken on senior finance responsibilities after the departure of Jacobi's chief financial officer, Kathy Garramone. —Jonathan LaMantia, Crain's New York Business

Boston Medical Center has received a $25 million donation—the largest in its history—to help open a new opioid treatment center to combat the drug abuse epidemic.

The donation from billionaire investor John Grayken and his wife, Eilene, will fund the Grayken Center for Addiction Medicine. It is the largest donation in Boston Medical Center's history and also marks the largest private gift made in years toward addressing the issue of addiction.

BMC President and CEO Kate Walsh said it's unique for someone in philanthropic circles to make a contribution of that size toward the research, education and prevention of drug abuse.

While the opioid epidemic has drawn increased attention to addiction issues in recent years, private donations for combating the disease have been few and far between over the past 20 years. Walsh called the Graykens' donation a “leadership gift” that she hopes will encourage others to provide similar philanthropic support. —Steven Ross Johnson

A 79-year-old New Jersey doctor faces prison time after being convicted of accepting kickbacks as part of a $200 million scheme run by a blood-testing lab.

Dr. Bernard Greenspan was found guilty of conspiracy, wire fraud and violating federal anti-kickback laws. More than two dozens doctors have pleaded guilty in wide-ranging fraud perpetrated by Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services.

Greenspan is the only defendant to have gone to trial. He was charged with accepting about $200,000 in bribes from the company in exchange for sending his patients' lab samples to Biodiagnostic, which allegedly made $3 million from its arrangement with Greenspan.

Federal authorities in New Jersey had called the case the largest fraud of its kind ever uncovered. They estimated the Medicare program was defrauded of tens of millions of dollars. —Aurora Aguilar
