Bundled Payments and other Alternative Payment Models (APMs) will prospectively define the payment for a given episode of inpatient care. Hospital and physician providers will be at-risk under these APMs for excess costs, but also have the opportunity to share in savings created by effective and efficient care.
Hospitals must know their adverse outcome rates that include the post-discharge period of time - and these results need to be benchmarked against national performance standards to inform decisions about care redesign. The reduction in adverse outcomes has the greatest potential for the elimination of excess costs of care.
