Facing a growing opioid epidemic, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has signed bills that allow community organizations to dispense naloxone, an overdose-reversal drug and another measure that mandates all opioids be electronically prescribed by 2020.
The state health department estimates that more than 1,000 people died from opioid overdoses in 2016. If those projections hold, that would mean the number of overdoses increased 33% since 2015. State health officials have declared the epidemic a public health crisis.
