James E. Murray, Humana's executive vice president and chief operating officer, will retire March 31, the insurer announced Wednesday.
Murray will stay on as an advisor until the end of the year, and Humana said it doesn't anticipate filling his role since Murray was able to develop and mentor colleagues to take on more responsibilities.
Murray joined the Louisville, Ky.-based insurer in 1989. He was named COO in 2006 after holding a variety of leadership roles, including COO for certain business segments, chief financial officer and vice president of finance. Before joining Humana, Murray was a partner at consultant firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, then called Coopers & Lybrand.
In a letter to employees, Humana said Murray played a central role in furthering the insurer's strategy to put customer experience at the center of every initiative. Murray also headed up the launch of Go365, Humana's employer wellness and rewards program.
“Jim's commitment to Humana and contributions to our success are without parallel,” Humana CEO Bruce D. Broussard said in a statement.
