Who: Terry Shaw, 54
New role: President and CEO of 46-hospital Adventist Health System, based in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Background: Shaw, who began his career with Adventist as a business intern in 1982, was most recently executive VP, CFO and COO. He is also currently vice chairman of quality-improvement organization Premier. Shaw succeeds Don Jernigan, 71, who announced his retirement in August after 10 years in the top spot. Jernigan will teach at the Adventist Health System Leadership Institute.
Top priorities: As the head of Adventist, Shaw is committed to ensuring the system is “working as a unified system, leveraging resources and best practices across all facilities and focusing on four main priorities: capital stewardship, consistent clinical delivery, strategic development and operational integration,” he said.
Patient experience: One of the biggest opportunities in healthcare is enhancing patients' experience from the start of their care to well after they leave the hospital, Shaw said. “Streamlining processes for increased efficiency, approaching patient care in a manner that exhibits uncommon compassion, and delivering best-practice whole-person care across all patient-care models are all factors that help shape and enhance the patient experience,” he said.
