Letters: How about keeping an open mind on Trump?

Regarding the Vital Signs blog “An election that will transform healthcare,” as a long-time subscriber and reader, I have noticed the unmistakable tilt in Merrill Goozner's editorials to favor one side. Now he bemoans the election of Mr. Trump—someone who has had nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act, which actually is collapsing on its own. Mr. Goozner has no idea what will happen and neither does anyone else. All presidents deserve time to flesh out their vision. I would urge Mr. Goozner to keep an open mind.

Regarding the recent Vital Signs blog “An election that will transform healthcare,” we now face the prospect of being not only the last developed country to enact a guarantee (sort of) of healthcare for all citizens, but of being the only one to first enact it and then take it away. Regarding the Vital Signs blog “An election that will transform healthcare,” in the times of exuberance and anxiety post-election, let's pause for a moment before we sprint into many missteps. Look at the popular vote by state and nation in last week's results. Those disaffected by the Affordable Care Act have already voted; those who would be added to the disaffected by rolling back the gains of the ACA also likely voted—to keep it. The anti-establishment vote will only go up as disaffection over our healthcare system grows. Donald Trump is now the establishment. There may be more of a tilt to confronting some of the long-held positions in the face of budget realities. Other than the momentary pause for the changing of the guard, the one thing I am comfortable expressing is that the rate of change will only continue to increase.
