Adeptus CEO Tom Hall retiring in wake of unexpected losses and other newsmakers

Adeptus Health CEO Tom Hall is retiring sooner than expected in the wake of unexpected losses and a cash crunch in the third quarter. Board member Gregory Scott will take the helm on an interim basis, the company announced last week. Adeptus is a major operator of free-standing emergency rooms.

Hall had planned to stay on at Adeptus until mid-2017 after announcing his plans to retire earlier this year. But he agreed to leave earlier after the financial results in the third quarter, which included a surprise loss of $14.5 million. He will continue to lead the company while a CEO search continues.

Amy Wilson has been named chief nursing officer of St. Thomas Health, an Ascension system based in Nashville, effective Jan. 3.

Wilson was most recently CNO and COO at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., also an Ascension facility. Before joining Sacred Heart, she held leadership roles at the Children's Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham, including director of the stem cell transplant unit, director of the neonatal intensive-care unit and director of performance improvement and accreditation.

Gary Malaer has been named CEO of Carolinas Hospital System, based in Florence, S.C., effective Jan. 1. He replaces Darcy Craven, who departed to serve as president of Millard Fillmore Suburban and DeGraff Memorial hospitals in Williamsville, N.Y. Malaer has been CEO of Wuesthoff Medical Center-Rockledge (Fla.) since October 2015. He joined Wuesthoff in April 2015 as COO.

Greg Pearson has been named CEO of Minden (La.) Medical Center, effective Dec. 5. He replaces Steve Selzer, who served in an interim role since long-time CEO George French retired earlier this year.

Pearson, 41, previously was CEO of Merit Health River Region in Vicksburg, Miss. He previously held a number of executive roles, including COO of Merit Health, CFO of St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston, CFO of Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden, Ala., and CFO of Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion, Ill.

Richie Splitt has been named permanent CEO of Norman (Okla.) Regional Health System after eight months as interim CEO. He replaces David Whitaker, who stepped down in March.

Splitt, 50, joined Norman Regional in 2013 as chief administrative officer of the system's HealthPlex and Moore hospital campuses. He helped guide the reconstruction of Norman Regional Moore (Okla.) after a tornado destroyed the facility in 2013. Previously, he was VP at the Integris Health system based in Oklahoma City.

Jordan Cash has been appointed president of Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City, effective Jan. 3. The hospital is part of Oklahoma City-based Integris Health. He succeeds James Moore, who accepted another position at the system focused on strategic planning.

For two years, Cash, 34, has been president of Integris' Miami (Okla.) Hospital.
