Schatzlein retiring from Ascension Health

Dr. Mike Schatzlein, senior VP of Ascension Health and ministry market executive for Ascension's Indiana and Tennessee markets, will retire after six years with the St. Louis-based system, effective Dec. 31.

Schatzlein currently oversees 34 hospitals in three states. He also will step down as president and CEO of Ascension's St. Vincent's HealthCare in Jacksonville, Fla., roles he has held since August 2015. Tom VanOsdol has been named interim president and CEO of St. Vincent's.

Schatzlein previously served as president and CEO of Ascension's St. Thomas Health in Nashville from 2010 to 2015. A cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, Schatzlein practiced in Fort Wayne, Ind., from 1980 to 1994, performing the first heart transplant in northern Indiana in 1985.

Dr. Dean Gruner, president and CEO of ThedaCare, is retiring after more than eight years at the helm of the system.

The Appleton, Wis.-based system's board will work with an executive search firm to look for internal and external candidates to replace Gruner, a process expected to take six to nine months.

Gruner, 62, has served in multiple leadership positions with ThedaCare and its affiliates since it was founded as Novus Health Group in 1987. In 2000, he was named chief medical officer for ThedaCare and in 2003 became senior VP for ThedaCare Physicians. He became system president and CEO in 2008.

Anthony Filer has been named senior VP and CFO of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, effective in mid-November. He replaces Jim Puffenburger, who has held the roles on an interim basis for the past year and has left the system.

Filer was most recently CFO of Chicago-based Presence Health. He joined the system in 2011 after it merged with Provena Health, where he was COO. He had been with Provena since 2002 and also served as senior VP and CFO during his tenure. He was VP of finance from 1998 to 2000 at St. Louis-based Ascension Health.

Steve Kastner has been named president and CEO of Trinity Health Senior Communities, part of Catholic health system Trinity Health. He succeeds Ken Robbins, who retired after 18 years with the Livonia, Mich.-based system.

Kastner, 55, most recently served two years as president and CEO of St. Joseph of the Pines, a Trinity Health senior-living facility in Southern Pines, N.C. Previously he was regional VP of operations at Westminster Communities of Florida.

James Repp has been promoted to president and COO of Miami-based AvMed Health Plan. The roles have not been filled since the previous president and COO, Ed Hannum, retired in 2012, according to the company.

Repp, 49, joined AvMed in 2004 and most recently served as senior VP and chief marketing officer. In his new role, he will assume responsibility for AvMed's strategic execution, membership growth and operating performance.
