Henry Ford Health System has signed a contract with Pearl Human Care Private Ltd., an India-based company, to provide medical technology and related medical services to a planned 400-bed hospital in Tamil Nadu.
Pearl Human Care expects to break ground next spring on the Naruvi Hospital in the city of Vellore and will use Henry Ford's technology to implement clinical best practices and advanced digital technology. The hospital is to be located near a Ford Motor Co. plant.
"We are so proud to be part of the effort to bring Henry Ford's approach to high quality, cost-effective health care to India," Mark Coticchia, Henry Ford's chief innovation officer, said in a statement to Crain's.
Henry Ford's innovations international division developed the technology that is intended to address diabetes and heart disease problems in India. The six-hospital system based in Detroit also will help Pearl with education and training of physicians, nurses and medical program development, said Brenda Craig, Henry Ford's director of media relations.
"India has had such a huge rise in lifestyle diseases like diabetes and heart disease, they are clamoring for a westernized medicine model — outpatient focus and wellness based," Craig said.
Bob Riney, Henry Ford's COO, said the contract is expected to require additional employees in Detroit to manage, but he didn't specify how many.
"The sharing of best practices that were created by our team provides value through the growth of employment right here in Detroit," Riney said in a statement. " This was a significant part of our goal when we established the innovations program and we are thrilled to see our efforts mature and to fuel our growing role in the local economy."
Said G.V. Sampath, Pearl's chairman and managing director: "We are delighted at the opportunity to work with Henry Ford Health System in setting up a world class health care facility at Vellore. We believe Henry Ford's experience will bring to India modern techniques and practices from the United States that will help revolutionize health care in the region."
Pearl is planning to build a series of specialty hospitals, starting with Naruvi Hospital, which is expected to open in 2019.
Henry Ford's innovations division is also involved in another hospital project in Saudi Arabia. The Aldara Medical Center in Riyadh is expected to open early next year. Officials said talks are underway about other international projects.
