Donald Jernigan, president and CEO of Adventist Health System, has announced he will retire at the end of the year after 10 years in the top spot.
Jernigan, 71, will step down in December and transition to a faculty role at the Adventist Health System Leadership Institute.
During his tenure, Adventist expanded from a 37-hospital system to a 46-hospital system, and revenue grew 9% over the past 10 years, according to a news release. Adventist reported $8.9 billion in operating revenue in 2015.
Jernigan has held other executive leadership roles at the Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based system, including executive VP, senior VP and CEO of Florida Hospital in Orlando and the Florida division.
He is a diplomat at the American College of Healthcare Executives, a member of the board of trustees at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and a member of the board of Florida Hospital.
Adventist's board will elect a new president and CEO at their board meeting Dec. 8, and the individual will assume responsibilities immediately.
