Who: Nancy Howell Agee, 64
New role: Chair-elect designate of the American Hospital Association. She will assume chairmanship in 2018. Advocate Health Care CEO James Skogsbergh is currently chairman. Carolinas HealthCare System CEO Eugene Woods will be chairman next year.
Background: President and CEO since 2011 of Carilion Clinic, a seven-hospital system based in Roanoke, Va. She began her career as a nurse in the early 1970s and went on to hold various management positions. In 1996, she was named VP at Carilion and in 2001 was promoted to executive VP and COO.
Work with the AHA: Agee began participating in the association 10 years ago. She sits on several panels, including the executive, operating and audit committees. She has held two terms on the Regional Policy Board and was an AHA representative for the Joint Commission.
Healthcare as a team sport: Agee said her background as a nurse has helped her lead the Carilion staff, which includes 1,000 physicians, for the past five years. “I speak the same language as the people who are doing the work of caring for patients.”
