A Florida physician was sentenced to 46 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to a Medicare fraud scheme.
Dr. Isaac Thompson, a 57-year-old internist, was charged by the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Florida with misdiagnosing 387 Medicare Advantage beneficiaries with ankylosing spondylitis, a rare chronic spine disease, in order to receive approximately $1.69 million from Medicare. Medicare paid $2.1 million, 80% of which went to Thompson.
Along with his prison sentence, Thompson was ordered to pay the $2.1 million in restitution, according to a news release.
Thompson operated a medical clinic in Delray Beach, Fla. He misdiagnosed patients covered by Humana health plans under Medicare Advantage from 2006 to 2010.
