The University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, has signed a letter of intent to acquire Metro Health Corp., a one-hospital system in Wyoming, Mich.
The affiliation will expand U-M Health's services farther into western Michigan, according to a news release. The health system operates three hospitals in Ann Arbor and more than 40 clinics throughout the state.
Under terms of the deal, Metro Health will have access to U-M Health's services, including medical research. Metro Health employs approximately 78 physicians and 2,300 other staff members. It operates more than 20 ambulatory locations and primary-care offices.
The acquisition will likely be approved in several months, according to a spokeswoman.
In May, U-M Health joined Together Health Network in Southfield, Mich., as a referral provider for complex healthcare services.
U-M Health reported strong financial growth at the end of fiscal 2016. The system anticipated a $129 million operating surplus, a 4.2% margin, on $3.1 billion in operating revenue. The system reported 1.97 million outpatient visits and 45,400 inpatient stays in 2015.
