Attorneys for Epic Systems want to trim $220 million from its award in an intellectual property suit against Tata Consultancy Services of India and its U.S. subsidiary, Tata America International.
Epic asked a federal court for the reduction on its compensatory damages. That reduction would bring the award in line with Wisconsin law, which caps punitive damages in civil cases to two times compensatory damages.
In April, a jury awarded the Verona, Wis.-based health information technology developer $940 million, including $240 million in compensatory and $700 million in punitive damages.
The request for reduction, which would trim Epic's total award in the case to $720 million, was part of a motion filed earlier this month, defending against a Tata challenge of the award.
The initial suit was filed by Epic in 2014. It alleged some Tata employees improperly accessed Epic's proprietary information. Other Tata employees, working under contract with Kaiser Permanente, an Epic customer, were granted access to Epic trade secrets.
