Dr. Jaewon Ryu, 42, has been named executive VP and chief medical officer of Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania.
He replaces Dr. Albert Bothe, who has transitioned to chief quality officer. Ryu will begin at the end of September, according to a news release.
Ryu is president of Humana's Integrated Care Delivery arm, where he manages the system's clinical practices. He also oversees Transcend, a Humana organization that helps affiliates adopt population health practices.
He previously was CMO at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System in Chicago. He also held various executive leadership positions at Kaiser Permanente, the CMS and the Veterans Affairs Department.
Ryu joins Geisinger at a good time. The system is experiencing positive margins. Admissions at the Danville, Pa.-based system increased 17.2% year over year, mostly from its acquisitions of Lewistown (Pa.) Hospital and Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pa., in 2015.
The 12-hospital campus system reported $4.3 billion in total revenue in 2014.
