Dr. A. Marc Harrison has been named the new CEO of Intermountain Healthcare, effective Oct. 15.
Harrison, 52, will replace Dr. Charles Sorenson, who announced his retirement in December after leading the 22-hospital health system for six years.
Before joining Intermountain, Harrison was chief of international business development for the Cleveland Clinic. He was also CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a multispecialty hospital in the United Arab Emirates. As CEO, Harrison oversaw 3,500 employees who served patients from 31 countries. He began his healthcare career as a pediatric physician.
Sorenson will continue to lead the opening of the Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute after his retirement as CEO. The center teaches healthcare professionals about quality improvement and cost-effectiveness. It is expected to open in 2018.
Harrison was selected by the Intermountain board as a result of a national search for a new leader.
Last year, the Utah-based health system saw total revenue jump by 9.6% to $6.06 billion. The health system employs 1,300 physicians.
