The U.S. government will provide an extra $33 million to 20 New Jersey hospitals to help cover the costs of treating Medicare patients. The funds are based on what doctors would get paid in rural areas, and New Jersey otherwise would not qualify because all of its medical facilities are classified as being located in urban areas. The extra funds are used to reimburse the state's hospitals for the actual costs of treating Medicare patients.
