You still need businesspeople from the local community, of course.
But if you're a large health system like Ascension, you ask former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, who has made illness prevention a central focus of her career, to serve. “We need to look at things such as clean air and clean water and worksite wellness—they're just as important when it comes to total outcomes of improving healthcare,” she said.
If you're a medium-sized provider like Roseland Community Hospital in Chicago, which was in the throes of a financial crisis, you ask someone like Rupert Evans, who took up a career in healthcare management after retiring from the U.S. Air Force, to lend a hand. And, as director of a community health center, he knew how to balance budgets.
And if you're an innovative health insurer driving toward greater customer engagement like Cambia Health Solutions in Portland, Ore., you seek out someone like Mack Hogans, whose only prior experience in healthcare was that of a consumer. His long career in forestry had taken him into upper management at Weyerhaeuser Co., a huge forest products company.
Hogans' leadership “has been in the epicenter of the move to building a whole new platform of strong, consumer-oriented principles,” Cambia CEO Mark Ganz told Modern Healthcare.
