Who: Dr. Laurie Glimcher, 64
New role: President and CEO of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, effective January 2017. She is replacing Dr. Edward Benz, who will stay on until the transition is complete. Glimcher is dean of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.
Doing more with less: Glimcher said she will continue to build on the research and clinical strengths of Dana-Farber. With pressure from rising costs and low reimbursement, and National Institutes of Health funding at historically low levels despite Congress adding $2 billion to its budget late last year, Glimcher said there's tremendous financial pressure on research organizations. “How do we keep research flourishing with a strained government budget?”
Partnerships with providers: Dana-Farber and Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan Health System are exploring a partnership, and the institute launched a partnership with Portland-based MaineHealth this past December. Glimcher said she will continue to explore new opportunities for other affiliations. “I'm a big believer in collaboration, not competition.”
