The Cleveland Clinic and Select Medical have proposed building new inpatient rehabilitation facilities in Beachwood, Ohio, and Bath Township.
A preliminary proposal for a new 60-bed facility at 3025 Science Park Drive in Beachwood (at the Cleveland Clinic Administrative Campus), is on the agenda for the Beachwood Planning and Zoning Commission's March 28 meeting.
This week, officials with Cleveland Clinic Akron General and Select Medical presented plans for another 60-bed rehabilitation facility to about a dozen residents, said Bill Funk, Bath Township planning director and zoning inspector. The proposal has yet to be submitted for inclusion as an agenda item, he said.
Heather Phillips, Clinic spokeswoman, said this facility is proposed for 4125 Medina Road in Akron, at the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Bath Health & Wellness Center site.
Once formally approved and finalized, construction of the facilities will take about a year and a half, Phillips said.
Thirty-five beds currently at Edwin Shaw in Cuyahoga Falls would be transferred to the new Akron/Bath location. Cleveland Clinic Akron General leases the Edwin Shaw location.
Forty-five beds currently at Euclid Hospital would grow to 60 beds at the Beachwood location, and allows the clinic the opportunity to bring new services to Euclid.
"We're working on expanding the availability of adult inpatient physical medical and rehabilitation facilities throughout northeast Ohio," Phillips said.
The proposed Beachwood location is just a few miles from University Hospitals Rehabilitation Hospital.
Select Medical and Cleveland Clinic opened a rehab hospital in Avon at the end of last year. UH and Kindred Hospital Rehabilitation Services also opened an Avon facility in January.
If approved, the new Cleveland Clinic and Select Medical rehab facilities will provide central locations for patients to get care on the east and west sides and in the south, Phillips said. They will "give that access to patients close to home, so that it's convenient for them and gives them an opportunity to have it in the different regions throughout Northeast Ohio," she added.
