The Veterans Administration is allowing a 92-year-old World War II veteran who is dying of cancer to spend his last days with his wife in a Colorado nursing home that is not approved by the agency, but his family says he is probably too close to death to move.
Elmer Melchi, who jumped into Normandy on D-Day, is in hospice care, while June Melchi, who has dementia, is at a nursing home in Pueblo.
Son Garry Melchi told the Pueblo Chieftain on Friday the VA signed the paperwork to allow his father to be transferred, but the elder Melchi has been in and out of consciousness.
