ANA announces three new leadership appointments

The American Nurses Association announced three leadership appointments.

Alice Bodley has been named COO. She joined the Silver Spring, Md.-based association in 2001 as general counsel and also served as its chief legal officer. In addition to overseeing legal affairs, she also was the ANA's administrator for human resources and government affairs, as well as other departments.

Maureen Cones was promoted to chief legal officer after serving as senior counsel since 2008. She has focused on credentialing, litigation and scope-of-practice issues and served as the ANA's legal representative to the Coalition for Patients' Rights.

Ellen Lahman was named director of governance and international affairs at the American Nurses Credentialing Center, an ANA subsidiary, where she'll serve as a liaison to international clients and work with the organization's board of directors.

Craig Richardville, senior VP and CIO at Carolinas HealthCare System, has been named the 2015 John Gall Jr. CIO of the Year, awarded by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.

The organizations recognized Richardville for embracing the ability of technology to engage patients, including his work with two mobile health applications that allow patients to share data from fitness trackers, wireless scales and other devices. In 2013, the system also launched one of the largest virtual intensive-care units in the U.S., comprising nearly 300 virtually monitored ICU beds in North and South Carolina.

Richardville has been with the Charlotte, N.C.-based system for over 18 years.

Dr. Mitchell Katz, head of Los Angeles County's health system, will lead a new consolidated agency that encompasses the health system, as well as the county's public-health and mental-health agencies. He has been the director of the Department of Health Services, which runs the county's hospitals and clinics, since 2010. Before that, he led the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

Katz, 55, whose appointment was widely expected, was confirmed by the county board of supervisors last month.

The new “super-agency” is expected to save the county a significant amount of money, while reducing barriers between county physicians, behavioral-health providers and addiction professionals. But mental-health advocates worry that behavioral health will become a lower priority in the consolidated department.

Southfield, Mich.-based Beaumont Health has named Carolyn Wilson as its first COO since the system was formed through a September 2014 merger.

Wilson, 53, will begin her new role on Jan. 18. The eight-hospital system was created through the merger of Beaumont Health System, Botsford Health Care and Oakwood Healthcare, all located in the Detroit area.

She previously served as executive VP and COO of Fairview Health Services, Minneapolis, where she oversaw operations at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, five community hospitals and a number of clinics, senior residences and retail pharmacies. She also served as president of UMMC and co-president of University of Minnesota Health.

John Fox, former CEO of Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, joined the Beaumont system as president and CEO in March, and has since begun to build his executive team.
