Craig Richardville, senior vice president and CIO at Carolinas HealthCare System, has been named the 2015 John Gall Jr. CIO of the Year by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
Richardville has been with the Charlotte, N.C.-based system for over 18 years. Before that, he served in a number of positions at ProMedica in Toledo.
The college, known as CHIME, said Richardville has embraced technology to engage patients, including the use of two mobile health applications that allow patients to share with providers data from fitness trackers, wireless scales and a number of other devices and apps. In 2013, the system launched one of the largest virtual intensive-care unit systems in the U.S., which includes nearly 300 ICU beds in North and South Carolina that are monitored virtually.
Richardville's work has also allowed psychiatry, stroke treatment and other services to be delivered via telehealth to rural communities in the Carolinas. Carolinas Healthcare also oversees a statewide private health information exchange that includes over 270 providers.
The award will presented on March 3 at the HIMSS' annual conference and exhibition in Las Vegas.
