Not your usual stocking stuffer: a genetic test

If your holiday shopping list includes a health-conscious someone who just has to have something unique, what could be more personal than an analysis of his or her genetic makeup?

That's the suggestion from Healthspek, a Nashville-based company that helps consumers keep track of their personal health information. Healthspek is offering a $50 discount on its pharmacogenetic test (PGT) to coincide with Cyber Monday on Nov. 30. Gift givers can enter the promo code “CyberMonday” at checkout to get the discount.

“We want to encourage people to think outside of the box with their holiday shopping this year,” Healthspek CEO Randy Farr said in a news release promoting the deal.

The pharmacogenetic test costs $299 after the $50 discount and is designed to help people determine how they will respond to certain medications. The analysis includes 12 genes that affect drug metabolization. The test is performed using a saline mouth rinse, and after a two-week turnaround time, the results are recorded in Healthspek's personal health record and can be automatically sent to a doctor.

The test's database looks into the effects of about 250 medications, from Advil to Zoloft.
