The Cleveland mayor says the city's top two public health officials failed to address residents' health concerns as they struggled to do their jobs.
Cleveland Public Health Director Toinette Parrilla resigned Friday, the same day Mayor Frank Jackson fired Health Commissioner Myron Bennett.
Cleveland.com reports that Jackson said Parrilla and Bennett struggled to "stay on mission" since he hired them 18 months ago. Neither had listed phone numbers to be reached for comment.
Jackson says the problems continued even with intervention and "performance improvement plans" from the administration.
Cleveland.com says Bennett's termination letter cited negligence in handling public funds and overall incompetence. Jackson says the state Commission on Minority Health notified the city this week that one of its minority health grants was suspended.
