Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-Ohio) said he will use his new position as chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health to further Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
Tiberi takes the gavel formerly held by Texas Rep. Kevin Brady, who beat out Tiberi to chair the full committee after Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin was named house speaker.
Tiberi, who was head of the trade subcommittee, said in a statement that he is eager to start his new assignment and plans to “dismantle detrimental policies” in the ACA.
“I look forward to working with Chairman Brady and other members of the subcommittee to find opportunities to improve the quality, affordability and accessibility of healthcare, while creating the foundation for a patient-centered healthcare system for all Americans,” he said. “We will build on our efforts to make Medicare more efficient and effective so we can keep Medicare's promise to tomorrow's seniors.”
After being selected chairman of the main committee, Brady said the Republican subcommittee chairs and members would "play a crucial role in taking real steps toward fixing our country's broken tax code ... replacing the Affordable Care Act and saving Social Security and Medicare for the long term.”
On his website, Tiberi shows support for the popular Republican ideas of medical lawsuit reform and allowing people to buy health insurance across state lines.
