The University of Vermont Medical Center has hired a new chief medical information officer.
Dr. Doug Gentile began his new role at the Burlington, Vt.-based academic medical institution at the end of October. He replaced Dr. Adam Buckley, who is now chief information officer at the University of Vermont Health Network, a partnership of four hospitals in Vermont and northern New York.
Gentile, 60, will oversee the hospital's information-services staff working on clinical projects. He will also serve as a liaison between providers and the staff who maintain the hospital's electronic health record.
Before being promoted to his current position, Gentile was the center's medical director for clinical information systems, which includes applications that assist in clinical decision-making, electronic imagery, clinical documentation and provider order entry. He worked in the emergency departments at Vanderbilt University and Stanford University before joining the University of Vermont in 1994.
Between 2000 and 2013, Gentile worked at EHR vendor Allscripts, serving in a variety of positions including chief medical officer. He left the Chicago-based technology company in 2013.
