Martin Smith will serve as executive vice president of operations for Quorum Health Corp., a spinoff company created by Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.
Smith, 48, is currently president of Division III for CHS, and oversees 35 affiliated hospitals in Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Fourteen of those hospitals will become a part of Quorum once the spinoff is completed.
The new Quorum company, which will eventually be publicly-traded, will include 38 hospitals that CHS previously owned, mostly in small markets, as well as Quorum Health Resources, a former CHS consulting subsidiary. There's no timeline for the spinoff transaction, which is subject to customary regulatory conditions.
Smith joined CHS in 1998 as a hospital CEO in Cleveland, Tenn. He was named vice president of group operations in 2005 and promoted to division president three years later.
Thomas Miller was named CEO of Quorum Health Corp. in September, while Michael Culotta was named as its chief financial officer. Miller is currently Division V president for CHS, overseeing 33 hospitals in Indiana, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Culotta, a former LifePoint Health CFO, is vice president of CHS' investor relations.
