Who: Maureen Bisognano, 63
Retiring as: President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Cambridge, Mass.
She will be succeeded by Derek Feeley, the IHI's executive VP.
Background: Bisognano, who started her healthcare career as a staff nurse, has been with the IHI for the past 20 years, the last five as CEO. She was recruited by Dr. Don Berwick, the group's founder, and served as executive VP and COO for 15 years. The IHI expanded its global reach during Bisognano's tenure, in addition to launching the IHI Leadership Alliance, a group of leaders focused on payment reform and value-based care.
The need for idea organizations: “The pace of change has never been faster and the breadth of the work (facing industry leaders) has never been wider. To thrive in that kind of changing environment, you need new ideas and new models and improvement capability.”
Furthering value-based care: “The goal that's in my heart is getting to the IHI Triple Aim, which is better health and better care at a lower per capita cost. And doing all of that with a workforce that feels fulfilled and joyous because they're working in a setting that supports the work they do.”
