Pope Francis pleads for aid for all people trapped in poverty, and other briefs

  • Pope Francis pleaded for aid to “all those people around us who are trapped in a cycle of poverty.” Francis emphasized the basic needs of immigrants and refugees. Sister Carol Keehan, president and CEO of the Catholic Health Association, said those needs present Roman Catholic healthcare providers with an opportunity to supply aid and advocacy.

  • Stephen Ubl, the lead lobbyist for the medical device industry, has been named CEO of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. He'll succeed John Castellani, who is retiring at year-end. Ubl has led the Advanced Medical Technology Association, a medical-device trade group, for the past decade. Previously, Ubl was vice president of legislation for the Federation of American Hospitals.

  • Bayer revealed it has received more than 17,000 adverse-event reports from women around the globe who had used its female contraceptive Essure. That's over 11,000 more than the 5,093 reports captured by June of this year on the Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience database, an FDA website for patients and clinicians to submit complaints. Health policy and quality and safety leaders say the voluntary reporting system does not provide the rigorous post-market surveillance needed to capture adverse events before problems become widespread.
