Dr. Mary Wilson has been named executive medical director of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia, a regional affiliate of provider and insurer behemoth Kaiser Permanente.
In her position, Wilson will lead the Southeast Permanente Medical Group, a multispecialty physician practice with 600 doctors and clinicians that is based in Atlanta and part of Kaiser's health plan.
Kaiser's Georgia subsidiary is one of the smallest in the Oakland, Calif.-based organization's health insurance enterprise, covering 269,000 people throughout the state. However, membership grew by more than 7% (PDF) in 2014. Kaiser has 10.1 million health plan members, as of June 30, and a majority live in California. Kaiser also has large divisions in Colorado and the mid-Atlantic states.
Wilson's appointment comes a little less than a year after Julie Miller-Phipps became president of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. The division is also investing in information technology, announcing in April it will build an IT campus in Atlanta.
Wilson, a pediatrician, started her new role this month and has been with Kaiser since 1984, a spokeswoman said. Previously, she was the medical director for Kaiser Permanente Panorama City (Calif.) Medical Center, a 194-bed hospital near Los Angeles. Wilson replaces Dr. Michael Doherty, who served as the interim executive medical director and is remaining with the organization.
