In final rules published late Friday, the CMS will cut its increase in Medicare pay for inpatient psychiatric facilities, while slightly increasing what it was planning to give inpatient rehabilitation facilities.
Psychiatric facilities will now receive a 1.5% rate increase, down from the 1.6% increase the agency initially proposed last April. That should increase spending by about $75 million compared to the $80 million outlined in the April proposed rule.
There are more than 1,600 inpatient psychiatric facilities in the U.S., and they treat about 300,000 Medicare beneficiaries annually.
Rehab facilities will now receive a 1.8% bump, leading to an increase in pay of $135 million in the next fiscal year. Originally, the facilities were on track to receive 1.7% rate increase, which would have netted them an additional $130 million.
Changes in inflation predictions and other adjustments resulted in the different payment rates, the rules said.
There are more than 1,100 inpatient rehabilitation facilities in the U.S. that treat nearly 400,000 Medicare beneficiaries each year.
