Former CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner has resigned from LifePoint Health's board of directors following her appointment to head the insurance industry's powerful lobbying group.
America's Health Insurance Plans chose Tavenner as its next president and CEO earlier this month. Tavenner, 64, replaces Karen Ignagni, who announced in May that she would be stepping down from the role to lead New York-based insurer EmblemHealth.
Tavenner, a 25-year veteran of hospital giant HCA, joined LifePoint's board in April after leaving the CMS two months earlier.
Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint, the smallest publicly traded chain, “will move forward with its current roster of eight board members,” a news release said.
"While this means we must lose her as a member of our Board of Directors, the healthcare industry remains very fortunate to have Marilyn as a leader during this time of change," LifePoint CEO Bill Carpenter said in a news release. "Our board understands her need to focus on this new endeavor, and we wish her the very best."
