Novant Health says it plans to lay off up to 400 employees across the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based system as part of a reorganization that began last fall.
Multiple media outlets report that Novant is recruiting for 1,000 open positions. After deciding which employees can be transferred to new positions, Novant officials say about 400 people will lose their jobs.
Novant manages hospitals or emergency rooms in four states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia. It has 25,000 employees.
The company cited several reasons for the layoffs, including the lack of Medicaid expansion in some states, including North Carolina, and more uninsured people seeking help in emergency departments.
The company also cited a Senate budget that would drastically reduce the annual sales tax refund for not-for-profits and nonprofits in North Carolina.
